Two tall tales of mystery, the occult, and death-defying escapes
Bottom line - enjoyable stories, but not up to the standard of the Merlini stories in my opinion.

Two short novels featuring NYC magician Don Diavolo
Ghost of the Undead – PLOT a woman is apparently murdered by a man who can turn into a huge bat and escape through a fifth floor window in the side of a building with no footholds. Magician Don Diavolo is suspected since the woman was in his locked dressing room. The Scarlet Wizard uses disguises and his knowledge of how séances can fool participants to unmask the killer. REVIEW fun, light reading, but a little contrived. The footnotes about crimes and methods probably were intended to add to the authentic air, but are somehow distracting. ***
Death From Thin Air – PLOT the murder of a police detective in his office by a seemingly invisible man leads to Don Diavolo being a suspect because of his disappearing acts. Other crimes warned of by the Invisible Man occur, even as the police have Don under observation. The theft of priceless artifacts under the nose of witnesses and further deaths prompt Don to use extreme methods to uncover the culprit. REVIEW a sort of preposterous story involving a centuries-old apparatus and magician-tricks that goes in to too much detail about the artifacts. Stories like this are out of favor with 21st century readers, and probably for a good reason. **
The reader does a good job of presenting the story in a dramatic fashion, and a very entertaining story it is. Why, however, the producers chose to make this a disk that operates only on MP3 enabled players is a mystery. It is annoying to put the disk into a disk player and discover that it will not play.
I must begin by saying that I have loved Clayton Rawson's series with The Great Merlini for years. I had never been able to find any of the Don Diavolo stories that he wrote as Stuart Towne until this popped up as a recommendation for me. The book contains 2 separate novellas. The impossible crimes are explained well, but these stories seem to be written more roughly than the Merlini ones. The characters are not fleshed out and the dialogue seems much rougher. The detective character is just irritating. My impression is that the stories may have been written under a time crunch as they seem rushed. A warning to modern readers - this was written in an earlier age when racial stereotype phrases and terms were in heavy use. This is something that smacks the modern reader between the eyes, but if you can get past that, the stories are still enjoyable for the puzzles and illusion secrets. Diavolo is a stage magician and some illusions are explained for the reader, but many are kept tantalizingly secret.
Bottom line - enjoyable stories, but not up to the standard of the Merlini stories in my opinion.
